Before diving into the valuable lessons I learned from the course, I will briefly explain the acronyms and the scope of the ArcGIS ecosystem. ESRI is the world’s leading GIS software company and the creator of the ArcGIS product suite: ArcGIS, ArcGIS desktop, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Pro. This suite of GIS software operates on desktop, server, and mobile platforms to analyze and display location data. 

In addition to GIS software, ESRI offers self-paced MOOCs that are excellent resources available to the public. MOOcs, such as the one I completed, typically last four to six weeks and cover specific themes, such as cartography. During the course, participants receive free access to the ESRI software mentioned above and a certificate is awarded upon completion. 

During the six weeks of the GIS for Climate Action MOOC I took, I learned to use GIS to evaluate sea level rise and other climate hazards, examine the impact of climate change on vulnerable populations, and utilize tools to visualize climate change data, which can then be published online. I gained insights from prominent figures in the climate change community and felt inspired to continue pursuing this field.

As a Climate Fellow in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, being aware of the available tools is crucial for enhancing the climate profiles we provide to the Army. I encourage anyone with any interest in GIS to take these courses, as they cater to various levels of expertise. Mastering GIS is an invaluable skill that can greatly benefit many fields.

Después de una pausa de dos años en el uso de ArcGIS Pro, recientemente completé un curso en línea masivo y abierto (MOOC) del sistema de información geográfica (SIG) para acción climática ofrecido por el Instituto de Investigación de Sistemas Ambientales (ESRI). Esta experiencia me recordó rápidamente lo versátil y divertido que es usar ArcGIS Pro. 

Antes de profundizar en las valiosas lecciones que aprendí del curso, explicaré brevemente las siglas y el alcance del ecosistema ArcGIS. ESRI es la empresa de software SIG líder en el mundo y la creadora del conjunto de productos ArcGIS: ArcGIS, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online y ArcGIS Pro. Este conjunto de software SIG funciona en plataformas de escritorio, servidores y móviles para analizar y mostrar datos de ubicación.

Además del conjunto de productos ArcGIS, ESRI ofrece MOOC autoguiados que son excelentes recursos disponibles para el público. Los MOOcs, como el que completé, suelen durar de cuatro a seis semanas y cubren temas específicos, como la cartografía. Durante el curso, los participantes reciben acceso gratuito al software ESRI mencionado anteriormente y se otorga un certificado al finalizar. 

Durante las seis semanas que duró el MOOC de SIG para la Acción Climática, aprendí a utilizar SIG para evaluar el aumento del nivel del mar y otros peligros climáticos, examinar el impacto del cambio climático en las poblaciones vulnerables y utilizar herramientas para visualizar datos sobre el cambio climático, que luego se pueden publicar en línea. Obtuve conocimientos de figuras prominentes de la comunidad del cambio climático y me sentí inspirada para continuar dedicándome a este campo.

Como becario climático del Servicio de Pesca y Vida Silvestre de EE. UU., conocer las herramientas disponibles es crucial para mejorar los perfiles climáticos que brindamos al Ejército. Animo a cualquier persona interesada en los SIG a que tome estos cursos, ya que se adaptan a varios niveles de experiencia. Dominar SIG es una habilidad inestimable que puede beneficiar enormemente a muchos campos.
